Vietnam Airlines New Nonstop route from Ho Chi Minh to Copenhagen

How to Fast-Track SkyTeam Platinum with Vietnam Airlines’ New Copenhagen Route (2025)

With SAS moving to SkyTeam, the connectivity between Scandinavia and the rest of the world is shifting. I’ve been keeping a close eye on how partner airlines are responding, and Vietnam Airlines just made a quite strategic move. Not only are they launching a direct route to Copenhagen, but they are offering a “stackable” status opportunity that is honestly too good to ignore if you have travel plans to Asia.

Vietnam Airlines is launching the only direct flight between Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Copenhagen (CPH) starting December 15, 2025. To fill seats, they are offering instant status upgrades for premium bookings. However, the real trick here is combining this flight offer with a Status Match to jump straight to top-tier Platinum status.

Vietnam Airlines New copenhagen Route: SGN to CPH

For years, flying from Scandinavia to Vietnam usually meant a layover somewhere (Thailand, the Middle East, Singapore, etc). Starting December 15, 2025, that changes. Vietnam Airlines is officially launching a nonstop service connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Copenhagen.

This is a big deal for us in Northern Europe. Copenhagen is a massive hub, and with SAS now in SkyTeam, Vietnam Airlines (also a SkyTeam member) is strengthening that alliance bridge.

They are deploying the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for this route, flying three times a week.

  • Departs SGN: 22:45 (Mon, Wed, Fri)
  • Departs CPH: 10:50 (Tue, Thu, Sat)

If you’d like to check their cabin, I’ve recently flown on their 787-10 for my SAS EuroBonus Millionaire challenge, check the full review here.

The Hidden Status Opportunity

Here is where my ears perked up. Usually, route launch promos are boring, maybe double miles or a small discount. But Vietnam Airlines is being aggressive.

If you book a round-trip ticket for travel between December 15 and December 28, 2025, they are handing out status cards based on your cabin:

  • Fly Business Class → Get Gold Status.
  • Fly Premium Economy → Get Titanium Status.

Gold status is great (SkyTeam Elite), but for frequent travelers, we want Elite Plus (Lounge access, priority everywhere).

The Strategy: Stacking for Platinum

I read the fine print of the offer, and there is a specific clause that allows us to “hack” this promotion.

If you already hold status, you get upgraded to the next tier.

This means you shouldn’t just book the ticket and take the standard offer. Instead, you should match your status first.

Here is the play I would recommend if you want to secure SkyTeam Elite Plus for 2026:

  1. Match First: Before you book, take your existing status from another airline (like BA, Lufthansa, etc.) and apply for the Vietnam Airlines Status Match.
  2. Get Gold: Aim to match to the Lotusmiles Gold tier.
  3. Then Fly: Once your matched Gold status is active, book that Business Class round-trip on the new Copenhagen route.
  4. The Result: Because you are already Gold, the route promotion bumps you up one tier to Platinum.

Why Platinum Matters

Lotusmiles Platinum is Vietnam Airlines’ highest published tier. In the SkyTeam alliance, this equates to Elite Plus.

If you are used to Star Alliance Gold, this is the equivalent. You get:

  • Access to Business/First lounges worldwide (regardless of class of travel).
  • Priority check-in, boarding, and baggage.
  • Extra baggage allowance.

With SAS now in SkyTeam, having a top-tier status with a partner airline like Vietnam Airlines is incredibly valuable for European flyers, as it grants you perks when flying SAS, Delta, Air France, and KLM.

Important Deadlines

This isn’t a permanent offer. It is strictly a launch celebration.

  • Booking Deadline: You must buy the ticket by December 21, 2025.
  • Travel Dates: You must fly between December 15 and December 28, 2025.

My Take

I know flying during the holidays (mid-December) is tricky for many people. However, if you were planning a winter escape to Southeast Asia anyway, this is a no-brainer.

The Boeing 787-9 is a solid product, and cutting out the layover saves you about 3 to 5 hours of travel time each way. But the real value here isn’t just the time saved, it’s the status. Gaining top-tier alliance status usually requires $10k+ in spending or 50+ flights. Getting it for the cost of one holiday ticket and a status match fee is a steal.

If you don’t have a status to match yet, or you can’t make the December dates, the status match on its own is still worth looking at to get your foot in the door with SkyTeam.

Safe travels, and see you in the lounge!
